The Hidden Cost of Procrastination: How to Stop Waiting and Start Living Your Best Midlife
A few months ago, I kept looking at my motorbike, staring at it on the drive, knowing I had two choices: keep waiting for the "perfect time" to move forward with that trip I always promised myself, or just start. The thing about midlife is that we don’t have time to waste—not in the way we once thought we did. And yet, so many women find themselves waiting—waiting for clarity, waiting for confidence, waiting for life to finally feel like their own.
Procrastination isn’t just about putting off cleaning the closet or delaying a decision about where to travel next. It’s much deeper than that. It’s the hesitation to step fully into who we are meant to be. It’s the invisible weight that keeps us stuck in the same patterns, even when we dream of something more.
Why We Put Off Living Fully
We tell ourselves we’re just too busy, that we’ll start next month, next year—once the kids are settled, once the house is in order, once we feel "ready." But procrastination is rarely about time. It’s about fear.
• Fear of change – What if life looks different? What if I don’t recognize myself anymore?
• Fear of failure – What if I try and fall flat on my face?
• Fear of judgment – What will people think if I step into something new?
• Fear of losing control – If I stop managing everything, will it all fall apart?
I’ve felt all of these fears. When I set out on my solo journey through Spain, I had every reason to delay. The timing wasn’t perfect, the finances weren’t neatly arranged, and doubts crept in—"What if I get lost? What if something goes wrong?" But the bigger question was: What if I never do it at all?
The Cost of Waiting
For years, I’ve watched brilliant, soulful women put their lives on hold. Some stayed in unfulfilling jobs, others remained in relationships that no longer nourished them. Some hesitated to pursue the passions that once lit them up because it felt too late. But the real cost of procrastination isn’t just lost time. It’s lost self-trust.
Every time we delay stepping forward, we reinforce the belief that we aren’t ready, that we aren’t capable, that we need permission.
And that’s a lie.
The Truth About Clarity
One of the biggest myths is that clarity comes before action. That one day, we’ll wake up and suddenly feel sure, bold, and completely ready. But the truth is, clarity comes through action, not before it.
The moment we take even the smallest step, something shifts inside us. We stop overthinking and start experiencing. We move from living in our heads to living in the present moment. And when we do that, the next step reveals itself naturally—without force, without struggle.
How to Move Past Procrastination and Start Living Now
1. Recognize the Root Cause – The next time you find yourself delaying a decision, ask: Am I really too busy, or am I scared? Naming the fear takes its power away.
2. Make It Small – Overwhelm is one of procrastination’s best friends. Instead of trying to leap from where you are to where you want to be, take one step today. Book the call. Write the first page. Try the thing that excites you and scares you.
3. Stop Waiting for the Perfect Time – There is no perfect moment. The right time to start is always now.
4. Let Go of the Need to Know Everything – You don’t need to see the whole path ahead. You just need to take the first step. The next will come.
5. Trust Life – The same force that has carried you through every challenge so far will carry you through this too. The path unfolds as you walk it.

The Time Is Now
If you’ve been waiting for a sign, here it is: You are ready. Not because everything is perfect, but because you are alive, and that is enough.
The road won’t always be smooth, but neither is staying stuck. So what if you took one step today? One small act of courage, one moment of saying, I will no longer put my own happiness on hold.
That’s how change happens—not all at once, but in the simple, quiet decision to stop waiting.
