FAQs
Following are a selection of commonly asked questions and answers as provided by past guests:
Daily Expenses
I spent $43 AUD (955 THB) per day, which covered all of my food (eating out, groceries, and resort meals), a 14-day scooter rental, an elephant sanctuary visit, a sunset boat tour, four cooking classes, Muay Thai boxing, multiple massages, drinks, transport, and tips. I paid using both cash and my Wise card.
When I return next year, I expect my daily expenses to be similar or even lower since I plan to rent a scooter for a longer period (approximately $10 AUD per day). I didn’t deprive myself of anything, nor was I strictly budgeting.
Money & Payments
Exchanging Money: Currency exchange is easy, with many exchange locations available for AUD.
ATMs & Cash: Most local vendors, including food stalls, tuk-tuks, Grab drivers, and massage parlors, only accept cash (Thai Baht). I had no trouble withdrawing cash from bank-branded ATMs.
Card Payments: Some places accept cards but often charge a 3% transaction fee.
Contactless Payments: I used Apple Pay frequently, but many businesses only accept cash.
Wise Visa Card: Works well at major banks and reputable businesses. I also found that my Visa credit card provided the best exchange rate.
Local SIM Card
Buy a SIM card at the airport for the most convenient option.
Water Supply at Hotels
Hotels provide fresh filtered water daily. If you need more, you can find additional filtered water in the laundry area.
Groceries
Lotus, Makro, Mother Marche, 7-Eleven
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are present but mainly active at sunrise and sunset. While not swarming, they do bite, so use repellent and wear protective clothing when necessary. Use coconut soap and coconut oil daily.
Vaccines & Health Precautions
Consult a travel clinic for personalized advice.
Recommended vaccines (for starters): Tetanus (if over 10 years old), Typhoid, and Hepatitis A.
Avoid stray dogs, monkeys, and bats.
Take out comprehensive travel insurance.
Laundry Facilities
There is a washing machine and dryer available at the resort for 40 THB per use. You can do your own laundry whenever needed.
Streaming Movies & TV
Streaming services like Netflix and Stan work fine. If using an Amazon Fire Stick, just connect to the resort’s WiFi. If you're watching on an iPad, it should work the same way.
Beach Towels
The hotel provides two blue towels for swimming.
Cash vs. Cards
I used mostly cash for small purchases like food, tuk-tuks, Grab rides, and massages.
I had no trouble withdrawing Baht from ATMs at reputable banks.
I used my credit card for larger purchases and charged resort expenses to my room to pay by card at checkout.
If bringing USD to exchange, use large, unmarked bills for a better rate.
Recommended Payment Methods
Wise Visa Card: Easy to use, with competitive exchange rates.
Visa Credit Card: Often provides the best exchange rate.
Bank Direct Debit Card: Preload funds for ATM withdrawals.
Always carry multiple card options in case of issues.
Cultural Etiquette & Respect
Dress Modestly: When visiting Muslim areas or temples, cover your cleavage, arms, and legs.
Everyday Wear: Light, breathable fabrics are best. Women can wear tank tops, sleeveless dresses, and shorts.
Temple Visits: Cover shoulders and knees. Always carry a sarong in case you visit a temple.
Public Behavior: Avoid topless sunbathing and wearing revealing clothing outside the beach.
Kissing in Public: Public displays of affection are uncommon in Thailand, so keep it discreet.
